During the 3rd World Congress on Spina Bifida for Research and Care of the Spina Bifida Association of America, on the 20th of March 2017 in San Diego, Child-Help in-house expert, Carla Verpoorten, received the quinquennial Lifetime Achievement award for her decades of work for children with Spina Bifida. Her effort to translate expensive Western medicine into qualitative practices in the Global South, was very much appreciated. In her word of thanks, she said she believes she might have received the award 5 years too soon, as, to her, her work is far from finished. And she is right. Together with Child-Help and the Bo Hjelt Foundation, Dr Verpoorten and Dr Van Gool are ambitiously continuing their research on treatment of the neurogenic bladder. Next April, she will travel again to Ethiopia to provide continence training for local medical staff. We will surely find another award for her, after the next five years.
