Aim of Child-Help International

We aim at improving the quality of life of persons with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (our target group) and to prevent further disabilities, initially in a number of low and middle-income countries. In the longer term, we want to become a Knowledge Center on spina bifida and hydrocephalus for all these countries.

Overall, we use the following operational methods

  1. We are a network of organisations in different countries (now Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Tanzania) to which Child-Help International (CHI) is a facilitating, coordination mechanism. 5% of the turnover is used to provide these services.
  2. We invest in and support local partners providing a variety of services to our target groups, aiming at the evolving needs at different stages of life, whilst maximising effectiveness, efficiency, interdisciplinary collaboration, and learning at all levels;
  3. We develop operational standards and -tools, and models of interdisciplinary quality service delivery to these target groups that can inspire and be used around the world;
  4. Once these operational standards, -tools, and models of interdisciplinary service-delivery are available, we’ll facilitate the dissemination and implementation of these operational standards and models;
  5. We stimulate cooperation between all stakeholders in care in the country to achieve sustainable, affordable, and accessible care for the target group;
  6. Child-Help works in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and from a decolonial perspective.

We have taken the following overall strategic decisions

  1. We work through public, private as well as through local partners;
  2. CHI gives the target group, and it’s representative organization a key role in the development of the network in their country, in political action but also in the further development of CHI as an international organization;
  3. In some 'focus countries' Child-Help has a country representative and works through (capacity building of) local partners who provide services and with whom we will also develop our operational standards and models for interdisciplinary service delivery; We work with and for the target group on the development of accessible care and quality treatment.
  4. We work with and for the target group on the development of accessible care and treatment[PM1].
  5. We work with local people as much as possible and avoid working with expatriates
  6. We develop tools and expertise to empower grassroots organizations to strengthen civil society.
  7. The member organisations are represented in all decision-making bodies of the legal entity Child-Help International, from the General Assembly to the operational meetings (“desks”).
